A few weeks back I got into an argument with a dude over literacy in China. The circumstances (3 a.m., local tavern) were such that I don't remember quite what our respective positions were. But broadly speaking, I was running down the Chinese and Japanese writing systems & he was defending them. The problem was that he had spent some years in Japan, whereas my understanding of the languages is almost nil, although I have had some familiarity with hanzi since childhood. Still, it was difficult to back up my points, one of which was that literacy in China will always be hampered by the tenuous connection between the written and spoken word. At the time I couldn't quite come up with any reason why that wouldn't hamper literacy in Japan as well, although since then it has occurred to me that while the vast majority of Japanese have Japanese as their first language, in China a vastly different situation holds. Chinese is really a language family rather than a language, comprising eight languages or language groups. The government insists that only Mandarin (specifically 普通话 putonghua, which is a Beijing dialect) be taught in schools. Therefore, millions of people are learning a second language and literacy at the same time, without ever learning literacy in their first language. On top of that, there is not much tradition of writing the non-Mandarin Chinese languages, so the writing system, which is less than ideal for Mandarin, is even less suited for the others. Over at pinyin.info there are several essays addressing these issues. I include below a bit from David Moser's "Why Chinese is so damn hard". Chinese people are not born with the ability to memorize arbitrary squiggles. In fact, one of the most gratifying experiences a foreign student of Chinese can have is to see a native speaker come up a complete blank when called upon to write the characters for some relatively common word. ...I have seen highly literate Chinese people forget how to write certain characters in common words like "tin can", "knee", "screwdriver", "snap" (as in "to snap one's fingers"), "elbow", "ginger", "cushion", "firecracker", and so on. And when I say "forget", I mean that they often cannot even put the first stroke down on the paper. Can you imagine a well-educated native English speaker totally forgetting how to write a word like "knee" or "tin can"? Or even a rarely-seen word like "scabbard" or "ragamuffin"? I was once at a luncheon with three Ph.D. students in the Chinese Department at Peking University, all native Chinese (one from Hong Kong). I happened to have a cold that day, and was trying to write a brief note to a friend canceling an appointment that day. I found that I couldn't remember how to write the character 嚔, as in da penti 打喷嚔 "to sneeze". I asked my three friends how to write the character, and to my surprise, all three of them simply shrugged in sheepish embarrassment. Not one of them could correctly produce the character. Now, Peking University is usually considered the "Harvard of China". Can you imagine three Ph.D. students in English at Harvard forgetting how to write the English word "sneeze"?? Yet this state of affairs is by no means uncommon in China.

My friend Dann Baker's 50th birthday celebration was held last night. Tons of people came out to fête the great young man. Dann is perhaps the finest musician in my acquaintance -- a great lyricist, a great songwriter, and a crazy delicious guitarist. He played bass guitar in my now defunct band, the Spaceheaters. His principal project is a band called Love Camp 7. Except for the rock instrumentation they are uncategorizable; you've never heard anything like them. His girlfriend set up a "wall of Dann", for which invitees were asked to contribute Dann-related memorabilia. By now everyone has heard the thrilling tale of Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian girl who was kidnapped and held in captivity for eight years before her escape on 23 August. She was interviewed yesterday on Austrian television broadcaster ORF, and one aspect of the broadcast, as reported in the New York Times (reg. req.), caught my attention. Ms. Kampusch said she always believed she had a future outside the grim cellar. She listened to the news to educate herself. Among the most poignant signs of her solitary life was her use of the imperfect tense, which appears more in written than in spoken German. I'm no German expert, but this strikes me as odd. First of all, in the transcript of the interview it doesn't look like she's using the imperfect (or preterite) unusually often. Second, according to the German Wikipedia, Austrians do tend to use the preterite colloquially for narration of past events. And third, by the age of ten, when she was abducted, she most likely had already mastered the usage of the two past tense forms. Anybody want to weigh in on this?

A woman in Hohhot, the capital of northern China's Inner Mongolia region, crashed her car while giving her dog a driving lesson, the official Xinhua news agency said yesterday. No injuries were reported although the vehicles involved were slightly damaged. The woman, identified only by her surname, Li, said her dog "was fond of crouching on the steering wheel and often watched her drive". "She thought she would let the dog 'have a try' while she operated the accelerator and brake," Xinhua said. "They did not make it far before crashing into an oncoming car." Ms Li paid for the repairs.
