The Guardian reports that the Japanese government has heeded the complaints of the former residents and changed the official name of Iōjima (Iwo Jima) to Iōtō. Both are written identically in Japanese (硫黄島; the name means 'sulfur 硫黄 island 島'). Most Japanese kanji have at least two pronunciations: one native, and one based on the Chinese. In this case, the Chinese-based pronunciation of 島 (tō) was used until the Imperial Navy misread the maps during the 1944 build-up, and they used the native pronunciation (jima). The Americans picked up that pronunciation from the Imperial Navy. As for the loss of the 'w', it reflects an archaic pronunciation that was retained in the Japanese kana and the Romanization until the 1946 writing reform. Back on 15 April I mentioned Dnghu's Europaio grammar & commented somewhat offhandedly that the text was interrupted by longish word histories. The Dnghu people took my comment seriously and have revised the grammar. Now the word histories are at the end of the book, where, as I remarked to my mother, they are like a "cherry on top". Tasty!

About a dozen people speak Livonian fluently, maybe two, over in Latvia. It's a member of the Finno-Ugric family, along with Finnish, Estonian, and others. It has been declining for years but refuses to die, as reported by Deutsche Welle. Apparently the Latvians have an interesting approach to second languages. "If you learn Livonian and not Spanish, the Livonians won't die," said 17-year-old Beate, who started learning Livonian two years ago. "I will know it and teach it to my children," she said. "Everybody wants to learn Spanish, but why would you need to go after the fashion?" How did Spanish become fashionable in Latvia?

I visited the Kotava forums (there's a little English section) and asked (1) is it an OSV language and (2) if so, why. It turns out that word order is very free, but OSV is the most common, especially in writing and in short sentences. This is largely due to the practice being preferred early in the language's history. The respondent, Kotavafamik, also said the following: Staren Fetcey, the creator of Kotava, explained me once that this sentence order is an advantage about the attention of the person talked. Indeed, listening is suspended to hear all the sentence. The most important information (subject and verb) is at the end. Via an unremembered portal, possibly Blogg Marteins Sveinssonar, I stumbled upon Kotava, an international auxiliary language created in 1978 by a lone toiler. The main web page is in many languages, but almost all the detail pages are only in French. My French is not great, so take my assessment with a grain of salt. Although Kotava, like Lojban, aspires to cultural neutrality, it nonetheless has a distinctly European feel. The vocabulary seems to be completely invented, which obscures but does not diminish the fundamental Europan character of the language. The non-European attribute which struck me -- indeed the most striking attribute of the language -- is the OSV word order. This means the object precedes the subject, which in turn precedes the verb. (English is an SVO language; Lojban is sort of SVO/SOV.)
