It is hard to keep up with the ongoing developments that threaten to flow like a torrent from the lifting of the excommunications of the bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X. This week's nugget: English bishop Richard Williamson is being expelled [Spanish, English] from Argentina not only because he denies the Holocaust, but also because he apparently fudged his residency forms, saying he worked for an NGO called "La Tradición" rather than that he was the director of the SSPX seminary. Over at Passport, a blog of Foreign Policy, Rebecca Frankel is freaking out. "Has Williamson broken any laws?" she asks. I'm going to guess that the answer is yes. Lying on your immigration or visa forms will leave you subject to punishment in just about any country. Now granted, if he were a decent person, he might be punished with a fine, or not at all. But since he is a bigot in a position to attract & teach other bigots, it's hard to blame Argentina for booting him out. This is the risk you take when you live abroad. You simply don't have the rights of a citizen. Some have wondered where he will end up. I can tell you. He will end up in his home country of the United Kingdom. No other country will accept a foreign Catholic Holocaust denier. Did you know that he has a blog? As I said to my friend K.D., "It's raining grace. Hallelujah." There's been a lot of activity in the world's smallest country lately. No doubt many have been coming to LMSS to try to make sense of it all, only to be faced with a frustrating silence. It turns out I don't have much to say, other than I am finding the events highly entertaining. To sum up, the Pope made three interesting decisions: 1. On 24 January he reinstated the four excommunicated bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X, as has been expected for months. Hours later, one of the bishops, Richard Williamson, outed himself as a Holocaust denier on the television in Sweden. 2. On 1 February he appointed Gerhard Maria Wagner to be auxiliary bishop of Linz. Bishop Wagner believes New Orleans was punished for its beautiful whores. 3. On 4 February, after an international outcry including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he demanded that Williamson recant his views on the Holocaust. OK, I guess I have a few things to say. 1. More of this, please! 2. I think the reinstatement of the SSPX is a fine idea. Their anti-Semitism is not new, nor is it a secret, nor was it the reason for their excommunication. You can be wrong or hateful & still be a Catholic. You can't consecrate a bishop without the Pope's approval. So the bishops were reinstated as laymen for repudiating their own consecration for which they were excommunicated in 1988. This ain't over yet; it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Here are some of the beliefs of Williamson & Wagner. I won't bother to say which is whose; the interested reader can ask the Google. Believes 300,000 Jews were killed during the Second World War. Believes women should not be allowed to attend university. Believes 9/11 was an inside job. Believes Hurricane Katrina was punishment from God. Belives the 2004 tsunami was punishment from God. Hates Harry Potter for spreading satanism. Hates The Sound of Music. Believes women should not wear pants [ed. note: I agree with this!!!].

Is the Anglican Communion is hurtling toward schism? Quick, get some popcorn! I'll save your seat. Every now and then a schism occurs (the last one I can think of is the Imani Temple in 1989), but rarely so high-profile as an Anglican split would be. In brief, those who believe homosexuality is expressly prohibited feel they cannot share the religion with those who submit to the authority of homosexual bishops. In the near term a schism is unlikely. But one can hope. The next Lambeth Conference starts 16 July. Oddly, at the same time, in the Church of England, those who disapprove of female bishops wish to be able to opt out of their authority & choose a male substitute. I'm just gonna quote St Paul here (Gal. 3:28):

When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be the Pope. This was because the new Pope was fluent in, like, eleven languages, & I conflated this skill, which I desired for myself, with the office. I don't want to be the Pope anymore, but I still keep an eye on the Vatican. The new new Pope, Benedict XVI (he'll always be Ratzinger to me), has decided to allow any priest to say the Latin Tridentine Mass, which was used from 1570 to 1970, and which contains some text insulting to the Jews. They could have taken that out. I get the idea, from this and other things, that Ratzinger dreams of the Church of long ago, a European institution secure in its total correctness and virtue. He seems unconcerned that trying to Europeanize it will hasten its decline. Nor should he be. His faith seems appropriate.

From an article in today's New York Times. Interesting article, but this paragraph is priceless. A well-known entrepreneur, Puspo Wardoyo, called polygamy an obligation of wealthy Muslim men, who, he argues, have enough money to spread around multiple women. My fiancée & I watched an episode of Law & Order, which we probably watch too much of. The episode "Under God" went as follows. A Roman Catholic priest killed a man who was selling drugs in his parish. The priest believed that the killing was virtuous because the man once sold drugs that killed a boy. But a little later the priest was forced to choose to plead guilty & to be imprisoned. A few weeks earlier we had watched the episode "In God we trust", which went as follows. A white man killed his sister's fiancée because he was Black. The details of the crime were discovered nine years later. As a result the killer was restrained by the police. He became a righteous Christian after the murder, and he felt he was not guilty because of that. But the jury decided that he was in fact guilty. The two Christians believed they were responsible to God & not the state. But an American Christian is responsible to God and the state. Sts Peter and Paul were imprisoned. Jesus himself was imprisoned, judged, & executed. Jesus did not attempt to avoid his imprisonment. I used to be Christian but am no longer. But I understand a good deal about Christianity. I am not familiar with the Christian doctrine that the faithful are obliged to avoid imprisonment by the state because they have committed a crime.
